Tales of Transformation ...

Picture of Jacob

Not only did Jacob have nowhere to go but he says, “No one wanted me.” He has a GPS tether around his ankle, so law enforcement knows his whereabouts at all times. “I got in trouble. It was drug and alcohol-related. Isn’t it always?” Although it took him awhile to realize it, Jacob knows now that drugs and alcohol was at the root of all of his problems.

“All kinds of good things are happening now. Since I’ve been here, I’ve built a relationship with God and enrolled in college,” he says. “I never thought I’d get my GED, much less be enrolled in college.” Once he passes one more section on his GED, Jacob will start classes at Miami University Middletown. He wants to be an EMT or a firefighter.

Jacob has been at Hope House Center for Men (CM) for three months. “My family is in Michigan, but I choose to stay here because they’re a bad influence,” he says. “I hope once they see how well I’m doing, they’ll be inspired to change.”

Once he leaves CM, Jacob hopes to have a career he can rely on and buy a house and a car. “Now that I’ve replaced the need for alcohol with God, I feel I can do those things. This place has opened the door for me and I give God all the glory.

Picture of April

The Miami University Middletown (MUM) Library had become home. Out of what she describes as selfish pride, April Jones refused to call the Hope House Center for Women and Children (CWC). “I also spent several nights in McDonalds—they’re open all night,” she says. “I really couldn’t believe what was happening to me. I got so caught up in spending time with my daughter and grandkids that I lost focus. Before I knew it, I lost my apartment.”

Born in Fairborn, Ohio, April moved to Houston, Texas with her family when she was 15. She came back to the area last year to reconnect with her brother, daughter and grandkids. “Also, I’m writing a book about how the Ohio River meant freedom for slaves, so I thought it was important for me to be near the river.”

When things went awry, April finally got up the nerve to call the CWC. “I spoke to Melissa on the phone. She said that many times we create chaotic situations, but God will use them for good if we let him,” she says. “I’ve learned a lot here in a couple of months.”

April is a sophomore, double-majoring in creative writing and finance at MUM; she’s on the dean’s list. “I want to be an example for women. That’s why I’m majoring in finance. If women are empowered to care for themselves financially, they’ll be more responsible for themselves and their kids if they find themselves alone.” April says she doesn’t know where she’d be today without CWC. “The center has given me a place to lay my head while God works on me.”
